Editors are intrigued by language and how it is used and evolves in daily life. We might expect that businesses would ensure that their signs follow generally accepted standards of spelling and punctuation, but when they don’t they sometimes remind me of the labyrinths and dead ends into which language can lead and mislead us with misplaced apostrophes, hyphens, and word breaks, and what sociolinguists call alternative spellings. These are just some of the signs that have amused me over the years.
